2014 ASC/AGC Student Competition

Annually, Clemson Construction Science and Management students regularly complete in local, regional, and national competitions.  Students this past fall represented the Department participating in the 2014 ASC/AGC Region II Heavy Civil Competition sponsored by Kiewit.

Students competed against peer programs including University of Florida, Virginia Tech, Auburn University, Southern Polytechnic State University, and Georgia Southern.  Students are provided a mock project, typically fashioned after an actual project, and are tasked with producing a deliverable showing their understanding of the project from preconstruction through construction.

The project statement this year included a Railroad Bridge Replacement project located on the CSXT Canton Branch in Baltimore, MD.  The bridge over-passed four active Amtrak lines along with a corridor owned by Norfolk Southern Corporation.  An additional challenge of the project included demolition of an existing steel truss bridge and construction of the new steel bridge structure.  The new steel bridge required an elevation change of 13” with final connection occurring in a 40 hour window on a very constricted site.  The Clemson Students were the only Team to identify proper use of equipment by selecting the correct crane to make the necessary “picks” in placing the new bridge, and also determined the best plan for construction of the project.

The Team won First Place and received the Best Presentation Award.  Since their sponsoring of the event over the previous 9 years, Kiewit had never awarded a perfect score on a presentation to a Team, until this competition.  Clemson received that honor.

Congratulations to the following students pictured in the above for continuing Clemson CSM Traditions.
